Hello, Pertandingan akhir Bolasepak SEA Games ke 26 diantara Malaysia dan Indonesia malam ini di Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, mana patut kita diberi lebih kurang 100 tiket sahaja, sementara penyokong dan penonton Indonesia dianggarkan 100,000 orang. Walau bagaimana pun, pastikan penonton kita dijamin keselamatan mereka, Saya yakin dan percaya Malaysia akan menang.

SEA Games 26th Indonesia, CDM's brief report

The 26^th SEA Games was held in Indonesia from 11^th to 22^nd November 2011 at three main cities, Palembang, the Host City, Jakarta, and West Java, the supporting cities.  There was a total of 43 sports with 5 disciplines in Aquatics, 3 disciplines in Cycling, 2 disciplines of Gymnastics and 2 disciplines in Volleyball. The 43 sports comprised a total of 554 events.

All the 11 member NOCs of the SEA Games participated in the 26^th SEA Games with a total of  5,219 athletes, 2,445 team officials, and 192 extra team official. Indonesia had the largest contingent with 1.091 athletes, 542 team officials and 103 extra team officials, while Brunei Darussalam has the smallest contingent with 64 athletes and 41 team officials.

The Malaysian Contingent comprised 372 male athletes and 235 female athletes making a total of 607athletes, out of which 352 athletes are in Category A and 255 are in Category B, 196 male officials and 19 female officials making a total of  215 team officials (excluding CDM and supporting staff), out of  which 139 officials are in Category A and 70 are in Category B. Tragedy struck the Malaysian contingent on the 9th November,2011 at 6 pm Malaysian time as one of the officials, Harun Osman, passed away after a heart attack. He was on duty at the airport in Palembang  welcoming the Malaysian delegates  when he collapsed. It was later confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack.

The Contingent won 59 gold medals, 50 silver medals and 81 bronze medals to finish in 4^th position based on gold medal tally, surpassing both the NSC’s target of 45 gold medals, OCM’s target of 55 gold medals and one short of the NSAs’ target of 60 gold medals.   The performance of the Malaysian Contingent was truly outstanding.

Out of the 39 sports, the Malaysian Contingent participated in, 13 sports won gold medals. The four disciplines of Aquatics, namely Diving won 7 gold medals, Synchronized Swimming won 5 gold medals, Swimming won 5 gold medals and Open Water Swimming won 2 gold medals.   Track Cycling won 7 gold medals, Athletics won 6 gold medals and Tenpin Bowling won 5 gold medals were also very outstanding.  Karate with 4 gold medals, Water Ski with 4 gold medals, Pencak Silat and Wushu, each winning 3 gold medals, Archery, Fencing and Shooting each winning 2 gold medals, with Football and Snooker each winning 1 gold medal each, were the other outstanding sports.  8 other sports won silver and bronze medals, while 10 sports won bronze medals only.

In total, 31 sports out of the 39 sports won medals at the 26^th SEA Games.

The 8 sports that did not win any medals are Baseball, Bridge, Shorinji Kempo, Softball, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Tennis, Baseball, Shorinji Kempo, Softball (men’s & women’s team) and Water Polo (men’s & women’s teams).  All the above except for the Women’s Water Polo participated under Category B.  Sports which Malaysia did not participate were: Fin Swimming (Palembang), Soft Tennis (Palembang), Traditional Boat Race (West Java), Vovinam (Jakarta) and Wrestling (Palembang). 

With the Malaysia Contingent split into two almost equal size, one based in Palembang (appendix 2) and the other in Jakarta (appendix 1), the management of the Contingent was also split into two divisions. Myself was the Chef de Mission based in Jakarta, while Y Bhg Dato’ Syed Mustaffa Syed Ali was  the Deputy Chef de Mission, based in Palembang.  Both me and the Deputy Chef de Mission were supported by our respective Secretariat comprising officers from OCM, MSN, ISN and NSAs. Overall, both divisions were well managed, as the members of the Secretariat are very experienced, who carried out their duties and responsibilities with a high standard.  The Team Managers of all the 38 sports and disciplines also performed their duties well, sometimes under quite challenging situations.  There were no case of indiscipline or any mischievous or in appropriate behavior.
