Coach Development Programme: nine coaches complete course at World Cycling Centre |
05.07.2011 |
Nine coaches from eight different countries have just finished the first of two Coach Development Programme (CDP) courses being held this year at the World Cycling Centre (WCC) in Aigle, Switzerland. The extensive eight-week course was attended by coaches from New Zealand, Qatar, the Netherlands, Japan, Malaysia, Iran, Iraq and Rwanda. For the first time, two female coaches were among the course participants: Carolien Van Herrikhuyzen (NED), who works with a track sprint racing team, and Maryam Abedi Ardahaee (IRI) who is looking to coach female road and track cyclists in Iran. While the first CDP course of the year was aimed at road and track coaches, the next course, from September 5th to October 28th, will be tailored for coaches of the BMX and mountain bike disciplines. Launched in January 2010, the CDP aims to develop coaches’ expertise and consequently improve the level of coaching worldwide. The 2011 programme includes new topics such as recovery and fatigue, strategies for the travelling athlete and training at altitude. Input from external experts A number of external experts have also been brought in to take sessions on laboratory testing, coaching with power, performance analysis and position on the bike. These experts, who have worked with numerous current elite cyclists across all of the cycling disciplines, provided precious input by sharing their experience with the coaches on the courses. WCC Education and Training Manager, Mr Keith Flory, expressed his satisfaction that the first CDP course of the year had attracted participants from such a variety of coaching backgrounds. “We had nine coaches from across the globe working hard to raise their coaching knowledge and experience to even higher levels. It was also excellent to have our first female coaches, which is something I hope to continue to see.” Next course for mountain bike and BMX coaches Participants of the next mountain bike and BMX course will have the opportunity to work alongside WCC BMX coach Thomas Allier and elite mountain bike coach, Chantal Daucourt. All information on the programme can be found in the Coach Development Programme Information Pack.
