Naim on doping

OFFERING a guarantee that Malaysian cyclists have been extensively tested, discouraged and warned about doping, Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) chief operating officer, Datuk Naim Mohamad (pic) is now looking at expanding the scope to ensure the country plays its part in the war on doping in sport.

No rider has ever tested positive for any illegal substance in the LTdL's 13-year history, but Naim said it would be foolish to take things for granted.

Firstly, in ensuring that Asia's biggest race raises its standard, doping controls of the current standards conducted in LTdL will be increased for next year's edition set for Feb 9-15.

Doping scandals in cycling on the world stage are beginning to claim victims more than from just within the peloton as last week, satellite television and races in Germany withdrew their activity.

The tours of Stuttgart and Germany next year have already been cancelled in view of the extensive doping scandals threatening the sport in Europe.
"We cannot just cancel a race. That would be wrong because we need to also get the message across, learn more, then eventually fight and win the war. We can do that through our race," said Naim, who is also Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president.

"To begin with, we control matters within our jurisdiction. Every elite Malaysian cyclist has a biological report card done by the National Sports Institute (NSI) and they also go through out-of-competition tests.

"They are regularly updated on the regulations on banned substances and they are sufficiently warned off such activity."

The only Malaysian cyclist caught for doping was former track rider Razif Salleh, who tested positive for steroids normally used by bodybuilders in 2006. He has served a two-year ban following confirmation of out-of-competition tests by the NSI.

Asked whether tests in LTdL previously were sufficient, Naim said they were in accordance to standards set by regulations for a hors category races by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

"You have to note that there is also a cost factor. To carry out doping controls of the current standards already costs us about RM100,000. We can try to increase that with pre-event random tests and to test more riders during the race," said Naim.

"Thus far, we've carried out obligatory tests on winners and jersey holders of every stage and riders through random selection daily during the Tour.

"We will now also look at other measures to be introduced.

"What I can assure you is that, if any of our winners is on dope, he will be caught. We will look into expanding these tests too, to test more riders during the race."

Pak Lah made a good decision

At last Pak Lah had made a very good decision for himself, UMNO, Barisan Nasional and Malaysia. He showed his trueself and sacrificed a position of power for the sake of Malaysians at large and his country as a whole. And his honest intention was for UMNO not to be split. So that UMNO will be united and continue to play an important role in Malaysian politics.

So the new leadership must take heed of this important wish of Pak Lah who had sacrificed himself for the sake of unity in UMNO. Therefore, Tun Mahathir should rejoin UMNO. Yang Berhormat Mulia Tengku Razaleigh should not contest the Presidency but can be appointed in the Cabinet and participate in the UMNO Supreme Council. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin can play a very effective role as the Deputy President. Datuk Seri Ali Rustam, Datuk Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Shafie Afdal can be very useful as Vice Presidents. Dato Nur Jazlan and the rest can aspire to be very good Supreme Council members.

We pray Dato Seri Najib, the son of Tun Abdul Razak, can play an effective role to orchestrate the UMNO Unity theme and consolidate UMNO in enhancing and strengthening Barisan Nasional for the good of Malaysians and Malaysia.

Seen here is Akmal Ariff, Najwa, Mysa, Naim, Athirah and Afiq.

Seen here Naim with Mysa and Musa Zaidee and the picture below is Afiq (happy and smiling).

Afiq has every reason to be happy and smiling because today is the first of Syawal and he is with his family members celebrating Raya after one month of fasting. All the family members were clad in beautiful clothes and the atmosphere was joyful and full of happiness. This is because as of now Malaysia is peaceful and people are free to go about doing their business without fear and in full sense of security. Other places in the world, people there are not so fortunate. Some are under seige, some cannot even perform their religious duties, some are under tight security and their movements are restricted, some do not have enough food to eat, while some are facing floods and the threat of typhoons and tornadoes, in some parts of Iraq, India and Afghanistan people have to be wary of where they move because at anytime they might get affected by suicidal bombers and they may loose their lives.

Alhamdullillah syukur, thank GOD, in Malaysia we are living peacefully together even though we come from different ethnic backgrounds, religion, culture and skin colour. The danger is we are more and more taking these for granted. There are voices from certain quarters of abolishing the ISA (Internal Security Act). Whilst we have enjoyed peace and harmony because we know that irresponsible elements will be caught and kept behind bars and locked up for the safety of the many rather than the interest of a smaller group. Now suddenly we want to be civil, we want to do away with tools that have successfully guarded the sancrosynct of the majority. We want to be first class citizens of the world, we want to be free to do what we want to do even though sometimes this will touch on sensitive racial issues. Yes, I agree that the ISA was for the communists then, but now it is good for those who want to incite racial hatred, for those people who want to say what they want to say, accuses and alleges, but do not back their allegations with any sound proof and facts. Quoting reliable sources and the souces were never ever revealed on the pretext it will endanger their safety. These irresponsible people should be stopped immediately and there is no other instrument that deals with this as best as the ISA.

The American Government never agreed with us on the ISA, but after the September 11 fiasco, the ISA was also relevant and pertinent in the United States of America. As for America, "sudah terantuk baru nak tengadah". There is no harm in keeping these irresponsible elements in under lock and key for awhile. If they are not so harmful and will not affect our peace and harmony, let them go. But it will be too late if we do not take any action and their activities can harm a lot of people. Yes, I agree. In executing these powers, due care and deligence have to be exercised. If one or two or even ten mistakes were made in implementing it, there are ten times more that have been correct and accurate and that had saved the peace and harmony. Malaysians should not worry because the Internal Security Act is more good than harm.

We not only want Afiq to continue smiling and be happy, we also want his future generation to be living peacefully and in harmony.

Selamat hari raya aidilfitri. Maaf zahir dan batin.
